On the other hand, although compartment syndrome and crush syndrome are considered part of the same disease spectrum, they are different, and fasciotomy is not considered the first-line treatment for crush syndrome. While successful results have been reported in fasciotomy performed before 6–12 h, which is called early fasciotomy, generally poor results have been reported in late fasciotomy. On the one hand, compartment syndrome is considered a surgical emergency in which fasciotomy is the only treatment because muscle necrosis can occur if the intracompartmental pressure rises more than 30 mm Hg for more than 8 h. The indication and timing of fasciotomy in crush injury are controversial. Therefore, early amputations may save lives, and survival chances should not be compromised by desperate and inefficient attempts to save a limb This muscle necrosis is also a source of infection, sepsis, and death. In patients with crush injury, severely traumatized limbs with tissue necrosis are a potential source of myoglobin and potassium release into the circulation. The primary goal of treatment in crush injury should be to save lives, secondly, to preserve limb function. A value of p < 0.05 was accepted as statistically significant for all tests. IBM SPSS 20.0 (Armonk, New York, IBM Corp.) was used for all statistical analyses. To compare more than two groups, the Kruskal–Wallis test was employed. Mann–Whitney U test was used to compare continuous variables between two groups. The Kolmogorov–Smirnov test was used to confirm the normality of the distribution for continuous variables. To compare categorical variables between the groups, the chi-square test was performed. While continuous variables were summed up as mean, standard deviation, median, and quartiles (Q1–Q3), categorical variables were expressed as numbers and percentages. We could not do long-term follow-ups of the patients. On the 15th day after the disaster, the patients were transferred to other health institutions. Our hospital was damaged after the earthquakes, and the main buildings were evacuated on. The mortality rates of the groups were compared. The second group is those with lower limb crush injuries other than the thigh, the third group is unilateral thigh or unilateral thigh plus other parts, and the fourth group is bilateral thigh or bilateral thigh plus other limb parts. The first group is those who do not have crush injuries in their lower extremities. For this reason, patients with lower limb injuries with crush syndrome were divided into four groups according to the parts of the affected limb. This led us to the misconception that the crush syndrome clinic was severe in foot and leg injuries. When the thighs were crushed, the legs and feet were affected secondary to ischemia. In this patient group, the effects of trapped time, affected limb parts, surgical procedures on CK concentration, dialysis requirement, and mortality were examined. For the final evaluation, 233 patients with crush syndrome were included. Among the patients, those with a CK concentration below 1000 U/L, which is an indicator of rhabdomyolysis, were excluded from the study. Patients who admitted after the 7th day of the disaster and had a hospitalization period of less than a day were excluded from the study. Patients admitted to our hospital in the first week after the disaster were included in the study. We aimed to determine the development of crush syndrome, dialysis requirement, and CK concentration according to the crushed limb parts. Amputation is life-saving, especially in desperate lower extremity injuries. Late fasciotomy should not be preferred in crush syndrome. Thigh injury is associated with the severity of crush syndrome and mortality. Peak CK concentration increased substantially with amputation ( p = 0.002), lower limb injury ( p < 0.001), abdominal trauma ( p = 0.011), and thoracic trauma ( p = 0.048). Mortality was significantly increased in patients with thigh injuries ( p = 0.028). Lower extremity injury, abdominal trauma, and thoracic trauma were associated with mortality. One hundred and two patients (56.7%) underwent hemodialysis. Fasciotomy and amputation were performed in 41 (17.6%) and 72 (30.9%) patients. The mean time under the rubble was 41.89 ± 29.75 h. Demographic data, physical and laboratory findings, surgical treatments, and outcomes were recorded. Totally, 233 crush syndrome patients were included. The clinical data of patients during their first week of hospitalization were analyzed retrospectively. We aimed to share our experiences after the Kahramanmaraş earthquake, to predict the severity of crush syndrome and mortality, and to guide the surgical decision. The decision of fasciotomy or amputation in crush syndrome is controversial and challenging for surgeons.

Cue a cleverly cut together procession of images where this idea is illustrated: microscopic dust particles and fluorescent lights buzz across screen before resting on a final shot of spinning atoms. Comparing algebra to music, Bohr asks if Oppenheimer can hear the equations on the page like you would a symphony. In that scene, Kenneth Branagh’s older Danish scientist Niels Bohr lectures a young Oppenheimer at university. CREDIT: Universal Göransson’s favourite sequence was tough to pull offĮven more tricky than Oppenheimer’s theme was a montage near the start of the movie. But then if you press down the bow heavily and change the speed, you can make something horrific, manic or neurotic in a split second… Chris and I were constantly talking about going in and out of different emotions.”Ĭillian Murphy in ‘Oppenheimer’. With a solo violin, you can play the most beautiful, romantic vibrato. “Oppenheimer was a genius with a lot of complex layers underneath. “One of the early ideas that Chris had was the use of the violin,” he explains. Göransson calls Murphy’s performance “almost inhuman”, and describes how difficult it was to come up with a recurring theme that matched his nuanced portrayal. The way Murphy played him was crucial to how Göransson wanted to write, whether stressed-out as the camera zooms in on his piercing blue eyes and furrowed brow or emotionally broken by the realisation that he’s created an unstoppable killing machine. The Peaky Blinders star is in nearly every frame of Oppenheimer, so a lot of the music matches whatever mood he’s in at the time. Cillian Murphy’s performance changed the score Later, when the first rough cuts of the movie came through, Göransson was able to start fine-tuning his ideas to fit actual footage. On breaks, Nolan didn’t relax with a well-earned cup of tea, instead he sifted through endless versions of different instrumental themes to find the version he liked best. Göransson says he delivered “around three hours of music before they started shooting” – to make sure Nolan was “listening all the time”. So the regular meetings had to stop because Nolan was unavailable on set. In February 2022, cameras rolled on Oppenheimer. Rodriguez/Getty Images for Disney He gave Nolan a playlist to listen to Ludwig Göransson, composer of ‘Oppenheimer’. “That’s two months where I write 10 minutes of music every week, and we met once a week where I presented it to him… Then we listened to each piece about 56 times and talked about what really grabbed our attention.” “I had about two months with him before he went off to shoot the movie,” says Göransson. “One of the joys about working with him on a new thing is that you have zero impressions in your mind.”Īfter that, it got quite intense quite quickly. He was told nothing more, though Göransson says that was kind of nice. On their second project together, Göransson says the phone rang on a random day with a request that he make himself available tomorrow to read Nolan’s new script. Oppenheimer’s director is quite a secretive man, so his collaborators aren’t clued in until they need to be. We jumped on Zoom with the Scandi film wizard, who also wrote soundtracks for Tenet and Black Panther, to hear how he did it. And Göransson’s epic work – all eery violin trills followed by thundering drum rolls – is a big part of that. The race against the Nazis to perfect humanity’s first city-levelling weapon makes for a thrilling watch. It’s more dialogue-heavy and features fewer blockbuster stunts. Following the real-life story of the American physics genius who helped invent the atom bomb, Nolan’s first biopic is (ironically) less explosive than his other movies. Oppenheimer, composed by Swedish maestro Ludwig Göransson, is the same. Can you imagine Batman without the dark and moody strings? What about Hans Zimmer’s ticking clock motif in Dunkirk? No mind-boggling reversed score for Tenet? Each soundtrack supports the action on-screen building and relaxing tension like a cinematic puppet master. Let’s be honest, if Christopher Nolan movies didn’t have music they’d be a bit rubbish. Visit Malwarebytes Bitdefender vs. Malwarebytes: Featuresīitdefender’s various plans cover between 1 and 10 devices and include the following features: However, the ad blocker wasn’t as effective, only blocking around 35% of ads on the various sites I visited. This extension is also available completely free.īrowser Guard blocked 90% of the known phishing sites I tried to access, which is pretty good. The extension works with Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, and it protects against phishing, trackers, pop-up ads, and PUPs (potentially unwanted programs). Malwarebytes offers good web protection via its browser extension, Browser Guard. It also provides a handy pop-up when a site is blocked, listing the site and the reason, and allows you to easily whitelist a site if you’re 100% sure of a false positive. It cross-checks every website you visit against a huge database of known dangerous sites and automatically blocks access to any matches - and in my tests, it successfully blocked 100% of the dangerous sites I tried to access Visit Malwarebytes Bitdefender vs. Malwarebytes: Web Securityīitdefender provides exceptional protection against phishing scams and a wide range of other web-based threats. And it doesn’t have a default full disk scan option, so you have to choose this manually in a custom scan. This isn’t as good as top competitors like Norton and Bitdefender, but it’s a good industry average.īut Malwarebytes’s scanner took over 3 hours to scan my entire disk, which is longer than many other antiviruses. Malwarebytes found 95% of the malware samples I hid on my device, and its real-time protection blocked 98% of the malware files I tried to download. It uses a malware database combined with heuristic analysis to detect threats, and it offers a range of scan options as well as real-time protection. Malwarebytes has a good anti-malware engine that is able to detect and block the vast majority of malware on both Windows and Mac devices. Bitdefender also allows for a lot of customization with its real-time protection, which will be appreciated by advanced users. It caught 100% of the malware in my tests, blocking every dangerous file before it had the chance to download. What’s more, the full disk scan only took 1 hour, and it didn’t slow my computer down at all.īitdefender’s real-time protection is also excellent. I downloaded hundreds of samples onto my computer for the tests, including viruses, trojans, ransomware, and cryptojackers. In my tests, Bitdefender’s full scan caught every single malware sample. And because most scanning happens in the cloud, it’s very lightweight, meaning there’s no impact on your device’s performance during the scans. It uses a combination of machine learning and a huge malware directory to detect all kinds of malware. Bitdefender vs. Malwarebytes: Malware Protectionīitdefender’s cloud-based anti-malware engine is one of the best out there. If you want a simple, streamlined, easy-to-use antivirus, go with Malwarebytes. If you want one of the best internet security suites in 2023, go with Bitdefender. Malwarebytes: Final Verdict:īitdefender is better for overall security, features, and price. Some of the most alien creatures you’ll every see, in all shapes sizes and colors. The lines are also helpful for referencing your depth, as there’s often no other way to know just how deep you are.Īs soon as you begin to adjust to this new discombobulating environment, you realize you are in a soup of animals. Some just let you drift along with a torch, while others drop down ropes for you to hold on. You feel very vulnerable and tiny, almost like being in space.Įvery operation has its own method of keeping track of divers. You’re in an absolutely immense blackness. I often feel like I’m ringing a dinner bell as I plunge off the boat into complete darkness with only the feeble beam of my light to poke through the pitch environment. The first splash into the ocean is always a bit disconcerting. Because there’s no bottom, it can be very disorienting, and you have to remain hyper-aware of your depth and position relative to the boat. Night diving on a reef is one thing, but being 10 miles offshore and drift-diving in 10,000 feet of water is a whole other thing. The nature of this dive is so different compared other dives and requires advanced diving and photography skills. Popular destinations for black water macro diving include Kona, Hawaii, and Palau. However, in a lot of places, these depths do not exist close enough to shore-if at all. Theoretically, black water macro photography can be done in any deep water (more than 8,000 feet deep). Some of them come up to feed on the nutrient-rich layer of water near the surface, and some of them are coming up to respirate-to absorb oxygen to use through the day. It’s actually the largest migration of any group of animals on the planet. Many of these animals live in the total darkness of the depths during the day, and make the long vertical migration to the surface at night. Working with scientists from various institutes and universities, we try to identify as many as we can, but often come up with lots of question marks. So many of the animals you can photograph on this dive are unknown or little-known species. So why would you choose to take a boat 10 miles off shore and drift-dive over 10,000 feet of pitch black water? That’s also an easy answer-for the chance to see and photograph critters most people have never even heard of. It’s a completely different experience than any other dive you’ll do, requiring advanced diving and photography skills, as outlined in this article. Simply put: The dive involves drifting in the open ocean at night. What Is Black Water Pelagic Macro Photography? Soon we were heading out into the dark on a bi-weekly basis, and have been doing so ever since. At first, I had no idea how to photograph this dive yet and didn't come home with a single usable image-but I was hooked. Soon, the black water called to me and I set out with a borrowed boat and three of my friends. I had some friends that were doing it occasionally, but I’d just started diving and didn’t feel ready with only 100 dives under my belt. I was intrigued when I first heard about “black water” diving. This opens up the ability to do black water pelagic macro dives. Because we are located on such a remote island there is no continental shelf, and thus deep and vast canyons are in abundance just offshore. It’s a rugged island with beautiful vistas above water and incredible life beneath the waves. I live and dive on the Kona Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii. I have looked at many different pomodoro applications during the past several years, and this is the one I always come back to using. Just like the porridge that is neither too hot nor too cold, the notification levels are just right. Also, this application hits the goldilocks spot as far as notifications are concerned. You would be surprised to know how many pomodoro applications lack this basic feature. These are the things that matter to me: a) Quick and easy access in the toolbar, b) Some sort of ability to log the total number of sessions in a single day, c) the ability to abort or pause sessions/breaks when interrupted and then quickly restart a session at will. I don’t use all of the advanced features in this application. If you are interested in seeing how the maps for your area have evolved over the years, you can use the same command to go back and download additional historical USGS quad maps for the area. To automatically download the topo map, click Automatically Add USGS Topo Map on the Map menu (under Scanned Maps), and select Los Angeles, 1994 edition, Los Angeles, CA, 1:24000. (You can zoom in on the approximate area, or use the Go to Coordinates command to recenter the map on 0, 0. If you haven't already, download ExpertGPS (it's a free download) and recenter the map on the area around Los Angeles. Downloading the 1994 Los Angeles, California Topo Map The topographical maps in ExpertGPS are fully-georeferenced, which means that your GPS waypoints and tracklogs (and any other KML, shapefile, DXF, or other data you have) can be instantly mapped right over the Los Angeles quad map. The actual Los Angeles topo map displayed in ExpertGPS is a high-resolution scan of the actual paper topo map produced by the US Geological Survey in 1994, including the full map collar with a locator map, scale bar, and projection information. The thumbnail displayed to the right is just a preview image. And it also has the ability to automatically download and display complete, high-resolution scans of every USGS topo map made in the last century, including this 1994 edition of the US Geological Survey DRG topo map for Los Angeles, California. I have not tried accessing the pictures to copy out to other programs, but I'll give it a go later.Preview of 1994 edition USGS topo map Los Angeles, CaliforniaĮxpertGPS mapping software includes seamless topo map coverage for the entire United States. This was something that was carried out by a company who were payed by the UK government and offered, free, to anyone applying for a copy. I've also obtained a free CD-ROM of aerial photographs of the UK. The one I have was sold through the Ordnance Survey, which is the official government mapping service in the UK. I bought mine, in a proper shop, for under £10 (about US$7) and I can copy from it into a variety of programs. There are a couple of fairly cheap map CD-ROMs available for the UK. I've never looked into buying maps outside of the US, but I understand they are much more expensive if they are available at all. The reason the maps and photos only cover the US is that the US is the only country that makes their maps and photos available online for free. Especially where you've bought the map in the first place, or get copies via Libraries etc. Although, there are relaxations now for private use. If I need to scan, that's no technical problem, but I'd suggest being careful of copyright. The 'use your own maps' feature would be interesting, would these be scanned maps or could they be taken off a CD-ROM such as those sold via the Ordnance Survey I wonder? I use a program, called UI-View, for APRS which allows you to import from the Ordnance Survey CD-ROMs. I have a CD-ROM, which was distributed free, of aerial photographs of the UK. I have to say that EasyGPS has been very useful to me already. Thanks for the information, I'll try the trial download and see what it can do. ExpertGPS comes with free upgrades, and one of the planned features we will be releasing later this year will let you use ExpertGPS with your own maps. The aerial photos and topos only cover the USA. These lockdowns disrupted daily life worldwide, decreasing the level and frequency of human activity and production.ĬOVID-19 forced industries, businesses, and large corporations to shut down. As a result of the severity of the virus, most countries enacted lockdowns to protect people, mitigate the spread, and ensure space in hospitals. As of November 2021, the continuing COVID-19 pandemic had killed over 5 million people. By 5 July 2020, 188 countries or regions had reported cases of COVID-19. On 11 March 2020, the outbreak of COVID-19 was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). The relationship between human activity and the environment had been observed in various public health crises in the past, such as the Spanish flu and smallpox epidemics, and was observed again with the COVID-19 pandemic. Simultaneously, researchers predicted that a reduction in economic activity would target the issues created by global warming it would halt rising temperatures, as well as diminish air and marine pollution, and benefit the environment. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, measures that were expected to be recommended by health authorities in the case of a pandemic included quarantines and social distancing. Climate change has led to the melting of glaciers, an increase in extreme weather, loss of species, frequent wildfires, and rising sea levels. Increasing amounts of greenhouse gases since the beginning of the industrialization era has caused average global temperatures on the Earth to rise. Greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the treatment process of this plastic waste ranged from 14 to 33.5 tons of CO 2 per ton of mask, the largest share being from production and transport. Enforced public use of PPE has posed challenges to conventional waste management. During 2020, approximately 65 billion gloves and 129 billion face masks were used every month, and disposed of. The medical response required a larger than normal number of masks, gloves, needles, syringes, and medications. Production and use of medical equipment such as personal protective equipment contributed to plastic waste. The pandemic also led to increased medical waste. The hindrance of environmental policy efforts, combined with economic slowdown may have contributed to slowed investment in green energy technologies. However, decreased human activity during the pandemic diverted attention from ongoing activities such as accelerated deforestation of the Amazon rainforest and increased poaching in parts of Africa. One of these investments was the European Union's seven-year €1 trillion budget proposal and €750 billion recovery plan, " Next Generation EU", which seeks to reserve 25% of EU spending for climate-friendly expenditure. Some developed nations introduced so-called " green recovery" economic stimulus packages, aiming to boost economic growth while facilitating renewable energy transition. Greenhouse gas emissions rebounded later in the pandemic as many countries began lifting restrictions, with the direct impact of pandemic policies having a negligible long-term impact on climate change. In China, lockdowns and other measures resulted in a 26% decrease in coal consumption, and a 50% reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions. In April 2020, NO x emissions fell by up to 30%. In 2020, carbon dioxide emissions fell by 6.4% or 2.3 billion tonnes globally. With the onset of the pandemic, some positive effects on the environment as a result of human inactivity were observed. As public health measures were lifted later in the pandemic, its impact has sometimes been discussed in terms of effects on implementing renewable energy transition and climate change mitigation. As the pandemic became a global health crisis in early 2020, various national responses including lockdowns and travel restrictions caused substantial disruption to society, travel, energy usage and economic activity, sometimes referred to as the " anthropause". The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on the environment, with changes in human activity leading to temporary changes in air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and water quality.
